Family Activities New Taipei & Keelung

🚗 While public transportation in Taiwan is good and affordable, we were really thankful to be able to rent, and eventually own a car (especially during COVID times) so we could explore beyond Taipei's buzz! We've gathered some of our family's favorite adventures in New Taipei and Keelung, some of these can still be accessible via MRT/Trains/Buses but in our experience, it's best to drive to these locations if you are with little ones.

We hope this guide, will be helpful in planning memorable day trips with your family.

New Taipei + Keelung

New Taipei City is quite vast and diverse, completely encircling Taipei City. To map out family friendly activities, it's best to group districts by their general geographical location.

ree

(1) Northwestern Coastal Charm

Districts: Bali (八里), Tamsui (淡水), Sanzhi (三芝), Shimen (石門), Jinshan (金山)

Tamsui: ☔️ Fort San Domingo, Tamsui Old Street, Tamsui Ferryboat near Tamsui MRT

Tamsui is a fantastic family-friendly destination, combining history, food, and culture. Allow enough time (full day or half day) to enjoy a relaxed outing with great family photo ops, riverside breeze, and plenty of treats and space for the kids to play.

ree

Historic site to learn Taiwan's history: Fort San Domingo in Tamsui was originally built by the Spanish in 1629, later taken over by the Dutch, Qing Dynasty, and then used as the British Consulate. Its strategic location by the river made it a key colonial and diplomatic outpost for centuries.

🚊 By Public Transportation:

THSR Taipei Station (or TRA Taipei Station) → Taipei MRT Tamsui Station → take the Zhinan/Tamsui Bus to Fort San Domingo (Aletheia University) stop.

📍Fort Santo Domingo

⏰ Weekdays 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM | Weekends 9:30 - 6:00 PM

Closed: The first Monday of each month, Chinese New Year's Eve and Chinese New Year's Day (as well as other particular days announced separately.)

Ticket: NT$80 for adults; free for children under 12. Admission includes Fort San Domingo, the British Consulate, and the nearby White House (Little White House).

  • Tips:

    • Best to visit on weekdays (Tues–Thurs) for fewer crowds and full access to the grounds.

    • Great for kids: wide open lawns to run around, old cannons to observe, and family-friendly historical exhibits.

ree

After Museum visit, we recommend to walk by the coast on the way to: 📍 Tamsui Old Street

If you are looking for a restaurant with great views of the sunset, check out: 📍 Water Front Restaurant

  • Local snacks to try:

Tips

  • Location: Right outside MRT Tamsui Station — very convenient.

  • Best time to visit: Consider doing the coastal walk around sunset: the whole family can enjoy watching the Street performers, kids can play in the open space with the beautiful red-skies.

  • Plan 1–2 hours here to avoid feeling rushed.

  • Avoid weekends if possible, can get very crowded.

Another suggestion is to combine half day in Tamsui, and half day at Bali (Left bank):

From 🛥️📍 Tamsui Ferry Pier  - Take the ferry across the river from Tamsui, and in just six minutes you will arrive at Bali Left Bank. You can do Bali - ferry - Tamsui or viceversa Tamsui - ferry Bali.

🚗 If you are driving, you can choose from the options below

a. go by car,

b. do roundtrips in the ferry to go back to where you parked the car

c. (You want to experience the ferryboat journey but don't want to cross to Bali? You can also go to Tamsui Fisherman's Wharf !

Tamsui Fisherman’s Wharf & ☔️ The Republic of Building Blocks Tamsui

Tamsui Fisherman's Wharf (淡水漁人碼頭) is a lively and picturesque port area located at the mouth of the Tamsui River. It has undergone significant development over the years, transforming from a traditional fishing port into a popular destination.

The wharf is renowned for its iconic Lover's Bridge (情人橋), a beautiful white arch bridge that illuminates with changing colors at night, creating a truly romantic atmosphere. Beyond the bridge, you'll find a long pier lined with various seafood restaurants, cafes, and snack stalls offering fresh catches and local treats.

There are open spaces, a pleasant promenade for strolling, and a ferry pier connecting it to Tamsui Old Street and Bali. While it can get busy, the overall vibe is relaxed and leisurely, allowing families to set their own pace and enjoy the views.

📍 Tamsui Fisherman's wharf is especially beautiful at dusk.

Perfect activity to combine with other Tamsui attractions!

🚗 Bali Left Bank Park & 📝  ☔️ PopSmile Popcorn Tourism Factory Bali

Bali Left Bank Riverside Park is a spacious promenade great for biking, strolling, and riverside picnics. You can rent bikes or family-sized 4-wheel pedal cars easily.

The 📍Bali Children’s Playground is super fun, and if you bring a picnic mat you could easily spend half or full day. Actually this district has many great parks with kids' playgrounds, if your children are little (below 6yo), we also recommend checking the Green Forest Castle Adventure Park.

🍿 PopSmile Popcorn Tourism Factory : we went to this Museum/DIY Activity when kids were younger and had a really good time. We recommended to make a booking in advance.

ree

Tip: Bali is ideal for combining with a half-day Tamsui itinerary. Consider starting in Tamsui and taking the ferry across to Bali in the afternoon, finishing with sunset views by the river.

But if you would rather explore each of these districts (Tamsui - Bali) at a slower space on different occasions, is also a good call as there's plenty you can do on both sides of the river!

You can consider adding a visit to the 📍 Shihsanhang Museum to your Bali Left Bank itinerary.

🚗 Qianshuiwan Seaside Park and Baishawan Beach Sanzhi and Shimen

At the North-western side of New Taipei, there are two family friendly beaches worth mentioning:

One of them is 📍Qianshuiwan, which has many coffee shops and restaurant options that have great sea views. Make your way towards 📍 Zhilan Park for a nice stroll by the sea.

ree
ree

The second one is 📍Baishawan in Shimen District, and this is our favorite for swimming and playing in the sand. Especially when the tides are low!

Coin-operated showers are available near the Visitor Center.

If you think one day is not enough, you could consider staying a night or two at 📍Chill Chill House it's right by the beach and have really nice rooms.

Planning to stay for dinner at Baishawan beach? Make sure to look for a restaurant before 8pm, and earlier if it's a weekday because many if not most of the shops close quite early! This Fish and Chips place is really nice: Dazzler's Fish & Chips.

🚗 Jin Yong Quan Hotsprings and Jinshan Old Street Jinshan

Jinshan Hotspring district is not as well known as Beitou or Wulai, maybe because it's not easily accessed via Public Transport. But if you are in the area, we highly recommend to experience this hotspring area, why?

  • Jinshan boasts several distinct types of hot springs, including rare sulfur springs, carbonic acid springs, and even oceanic/seawater hot springs (said to be effective for skin conditions due to minerals from the sea).

  • Volcanic Activity: Its springs are a direct result of volcanic activity from nearby Mt. Datun, contributing to the rich mineral content and varied water temperatures.

  • Coastal Location: Unlike many other hot spring areas, Jinshan is right by the coast, offering a unique combination of hot spring relaxation and refreshing sea breezes, often with scenic ocean views.

For Families, the most suitable Hot spring Spa is: 📍Jin Yong Quan. They have outdoor hot spring pools that are 60cm deep, with some slides other kid-friendly features. Remember to bring swimsuit and swim cap.

ree

Operating hours: 09:00 to 10:00 PM (on Mondays Hot Spring closes at 08:00 PM)

Ticket Prices:

  • Standard Adult: NT380 (Weekdays)/ NT580 (Holidays/Weekends)

  • Standard Child: NT200 (Weekdays)/ NT250 (Holidays/Weekends)

Complementing the hot springs, the nearby 📍Jinshan Old Street offers traditional snacks, local produce, and a glimpse into the town's history, making for a complete day trip experience.

(2) Northeastern Mining Towns, Waterfalls & Coastal Wonders

Districts: Wanli (萬里), Keelung City (基隆), Ruifang (瑞芳), Gongliao (貢寮), Shuangxi (雙溪), Pingxi (平溪), Xizhi (汐止)

🚗 Yehliu Geopark and Ocean World Wanli

Yehliu Geopark is a natural wonder on Taiwan's northern coast, famous for its otherworldly rock formations sculpted by wind and sea erosion, such as the iconic "Queen's Head." Many KLOOK / kkday Tours include Yehliu Geopark as one of the main attractions for a day-trip outside of Taipei.

For a family with little ones, it's even better to pair this outdoor attraction with something more kid-friendly. The Aquarium right next to the Geopark is a great option, while the variety of sea creatures may not be as good as the Aquarium down south in Pingtung, the Yehliu Ocean World is nevertheless an educational & fun activity for the whole family!

ree

📍Yehliu Geopark

  • Opening Hours: Generally 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM (or 6:00 PM during summer months).

Last entry usually 30-60 minutes before closing.

  • Ticket Prices:

    • Adults: Around NT$120

    • Children (6-12 years old) / Students: NT$60

    • Children under 6: Free

ree

📍Yehliu Ocean World (海洋世界)

  • Opening Hours: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM (weekdays),

    9:00 AM - 5:30 PM (weekends/holidays).

Shows usually run at scheduled times throughout the day, make sure to check when's the next one!

  • Ticket Prices: These are the prices that include the Show and B1 Aquarium visit. They also have other options of tickets on their official website.

    • Adults: Around NT$450-500

    • Children (3-12 years old) / Students: Around NT$420

    • Children under 3 / under a certain height: Free

Tips:

Depending on weather, choose to do the Yehliu Geopark first. Go for lunch, and then visit the Ocean world in the afternoon. For lunch, the places around don't look "nice", but the seafood and fishes are really fresh and so delicious! Like these two: Restaurant 阿杰 | Restaurant 鮮滿樓.

Looking for a Coffee Shop? Try Elisa Cafe Yehliu

🚗 Wanli Beach & Family Friendly Hotels Wanli

Wanli Beach was one of the first beaches we visited on the northern coasts of Taiwan. While it's not as clean as Baishawan and Qianshuiwan beaches. And it does not have coin-operated showers (Make sure to bring your own water supply to wash off sand)... It's still a great choice given the proximity to Taipei.

Wanli Beach
Wanli Beach

If Wanli is a bit too far from where you are staying, you could perhaps consider a one night get-away in one of these three very family friendly and affordable hotels?:

  1. INHOUSE HOTEL YEHLIU Right beside the entrance to Yehliu Geopark and walking distance to the Aquarium and many Seafood restaurants. It offers an indoor playroom for the little ones!

  2. CT GREEN BAY HOTEL With direct access to Wanli Beach, this is a nice option for families looking for a weekend to enjoy seaviews, time together, an afternoon by the pool, etc.!

  3. WHITE HOUSE RESORT Right in front of Wanli Beach, a bit pricier than the previous two. It also offers swimming pool and indoor playground.

🚗 Heping Island GeoPark Keelung

While Heping Island GeoPark is technically in Keelung, it's practically a stone's throw from Ruifang! That's why we're absolutely including it here as a fantastic family-friendly activity for a half or even full day out. They've got a cool natural swimming pool, just a heads-up, it can be quite deep, so definitely bring those floating devices for the kids! Plus, pack goggles and snorkeling gear so they can peek at the fish, and maybe some buckets to catch little creatures (and, of course, release them later!). For us parents, you can even sample some local beers they sell at the gift shop or take some home if you are driving! With such breathtaking scenery along the short walking trails, it truly makes for a perfect, refreshing day out in nature with the whole family.

Jiufen Old St & Shifen Waterfall Pingxi

Jiufen is probably one of the most popular day trips from Taipei, and because of this, it's usually too crowded and difficult to find parking! We enjoyed our time there, but this is a day trip we have not repeated over the years. Nevertheless, it's a fun place for family outing, especially if you combine it with other attractions nearby.

🏮 Jiufen Old Street & Tea Houses

🕒 Opening Times

  • Streets & shops: open roughly 10 AM–7 PM; you can walk around anytime, though eateries start later and close by ~7 PM

  • Artist Tea House: open 1.30 PM–7 PM daily

  • Siidcha Coffee/Tea Shop: Or you could try smaller shops instead, this is not a traditional one but they have more kid-friendly options in the menu, you need to order one drink per person.

  • Access via TRA to Ruifang Station, then bus #1062 or #788 (~15 min)

ree
ree

For Shifen Waterfall, it's easier to park the car, and as our kids are really into bugs and nature in general, they really enjoyed the short hike to the waterfall.

  • Oct 1–May 31: 9:00 AM–5:00 PM (last entry 4:30 PM)

  • Closed only on Lunar New Year Day

🚋 How to Get There

  1. Train: Taipei → Ruifang (Yilan Line) → transfer to the Pingxi branch → Shifen Station (~1 h 15 m, ~NT$70)

  2. Walk from station along Old Street → Visitor Center → waterfall (~30 min total)

  3. Return Options:

    • Train back via Ruifang, or

    • Bus 965 direct to Taipei (~45 min)

You can also consider combining with a stroll & sky‑lantern release on Shifen Old Street. We went for a short walk (kids were tired!) but chose to skip the sky-lantern release for environmental reasons. We still had loads of fun watching other people release theirs!

🚗 ☔️ Gold Museum and Golden Waterfall Ruifang

The 📍Gold Museum is one of those activities I would take friends and family visiting from abroad. It has some fun hands-on activities, good exhibits to learn and get a feeling of what was life was back then, great location for photography, beautiful surroundings, etc. No need to book, but double-check if the museum will be open and make sure to sign up for the gold-panning activity and take note of what time it's taking place.

The bikes are covered, which is a big plus on sunny or rainy days. Departures run on a fixed schedule, so booking ahead or arriving early is recommended. 🚗 Fulong Beach, Old Caoling Tunnel bike path & Scenic routes Gongliao

📍Fulong Beach is famous for the annual sand sculpture festival and is undoubtedly a great spot for families to relax by the sea. The shallow waters and wide, sandy shore make it safe and fun for kids.

Nearby, you can rent bikes and explore the scenic Old Caoling Tunnel, a cool, shaded ride that’s perfect for families.

ree

ree

The north coast is truly blessed with many wonderful places to discover... but one of the things that we really enjoy as a family is the scenic route as we make our way back home! Especially when we are driving in the Gongliao District, the views at sunset are just breathtaking!

If you have the opportunity, we highly recommend setting the 'time to go home' to just before sunset. Put some great music on, and enjoy such special moments with your loved ones 🧡.

We visited Pinglin as a quick stop as we made our way home from Yilan. It was a good weather day so we had a nice walk around the 📍Pinglin Old Street and bought some delicious snacks.

As we were crossing the bridge, we couldn't believe how many birds there were in the trees! Little did we know that this scenic spot is famous for birds watching: 📍 Pinglin Arch Bridge

New Taipei is full of wonderful surprises!

It’s a great place to spot cattle egrets, little egrets, and night herons—especially in the early morning or late afternoon when these birds gather near the river.

Easily accessible and stroller-friendly, the bridge area offers calm river views and a peaceful atmosphere, making it ideal for a short, family-friendly nature stop.

Tip: Bring binoculars for a closer look, and combine your visit with a tea-tasting experience in Pinglin Old Street nearby.

Wulai is such an underrated district, it has so many great options for camping, hotsprings, waterfalls, hiking trails, family friendly activities, amazing food!

We highly recommend this hot spring place: 📍Sun-Moon-Light Hot Spring. It's outside the main town and you will need to reach there by car. It's very kid's friendly. We really enjoyed spending the afternoon with friends here.

After relaxing at Hotsprings, find some local street food at the 📍Wulai Old Street.

Also, not to be missed, the 📍 Wulai Scenic Train & the 📍Atayal Museum.

If you are staying the night in the area, we recommend visiting the 📍Neidong Forest Area the morning after. Nature’s beauty at its best:

Hemei Mountain Trail, Bitan Scenic Area Xindian

Easily accesible via MRT, this full-day outing is perfect for the nature lovers.

This is one of our favorite family hikes in New Taipei. It is challenging for the little ones, but fun and rewarding as it ends with a playground, and a (very very short) boat trip.

Take MRT to Xindian Station, or park car here.

Start the adventure by crossing the Bitan Suspension Bridge.
